For Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University, open science (OS) is an accelerator of access to knowledge and a catalyst for innovative projects that bring tangible benefits in the form of alternative publication and evaluation models.

The institution’s commitment can be measured in terms of its actions:
- early, such as the opening of the HAL portal back in 2008;
- proactive, for instance including open science in the institution’s internal calls for projects;
- pioneering, such as the Prairial open access journal incubator launched in 2017. In line with the institution’s strategy, the Prairial platform combines the concept of a local service for humanities and social sciences journals with a dynamic partnership with the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (MSH) and the Université Lumière Lyon 2, which is conducive to increased outreach.
This commitment to the diamond publication model is complemented by the creation of a team able to respond to the challenges of managing and opening up research data, with the support of the University Library (UL), the Research and Doctoral Studies Department, the Legal and Institutional Affairs Department, the Archives Unit and the Digital Department, working together in the shared support unit for research data management (CADOR). - Rewarding openness

In order to comply with national guidelines on open science, the institution also introduced innovative evaluation criteria in 2023, in the form of an innovative “open science bonus” adapted to the humanities and social sciences and taking into account the rate of publication openness and the specificities of each discipline.
Backed by a fund of 20,000 euros, this unprecedented step in the institution's history is helping to boost the research laboratories’ budgets and their openness efforts. - The search for intelligent, tailor-made bibliometric indicators

Fully aware of the specificities of the humanities and social sciences, Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University has rolled out the Biblioref application: a tool for measuring and mapping its scientific production, which is essential for steering the institution’s research policy.
The application is also designed to meet the needs of the academic community as a whole, since the developments made meet open source criteria and are freely reusable.
